The evidence is overwhelming. By far the most effective way of reducing the number of abortions is provide women with contraception.

Since the introduction of contraception, there have been far more abortions than before.
Why?
One, contraception fails. The more you use it, the more likely failure occurs. That's when abortion occurs.
Secondly, the presence of contraception in the culture changes whether people *want* the pregnancy. Before contraception became widespread, people just accepted pregnancy as a fact of life. So the concept of "unwanted pregnancy" was a marginal one. With the introduction of contraception and abortion, people changed their intentions. They think "hey, I don't have to accept this."
Contraception is at the root of the acceptance of abortion. Once a baby is no longer something to reject, i.e. you don't need contraception, you don't need abortion, either.
Suzanne, do you have any evidence for your claims, or do you just pull them out of the air?
Suzanne you are talking out your ass. Abortifacients have been used for thousands of years and abortion was not unusual at all. For example, the number of illegal abortions in the States in the 1950s was estimated to be as high as 1.2 million a year and the generally accepted figure is between 700,000 and 800,000. Given population, that is higher rate than you have today.
