English Leaders Debate: May Set the Tone

May was breath of fresh air and kept Harper on the defensive all night. Dion and Layton were terrible and Harper told so many lies of omission I lost count. Duccepe was an after thought, albeit a charming one. More later.

bullshit, Dion was the only one who ooked into the camera and explained his policies. May did ok, but tried to hard...

Dion won :) And, that would make you clueless.

The media seemed to say that Dion won... We'll see the public reaction... Maybe another Ipsos "online poll" (I hate those polls - too demographically charged - internet users tend to be a slightly more "well-to-do" demographic, or more "technocrat")...

Koby has been anti-Dion since his election as leader.. I'm not surprised he'd say that... though I will agree with him that May did very well - that "Where is it?" retort to Steve telling everyone to look at the Cons. platform was classic.

oops

he online Ipsos Reid poll conducted for Canwest News Service and Global National found 31 per cent of voters said Harper won the debate, and Layton was second with 25 per cent. In third place was the newcomer to the leaders' debates, Green Leader Elizabeth May, with 17 per cent of respondents saying she was the winner, followed by the opposition leader, Liberal Leader Stephane Dion, with 15 per cent.

Steve on most issues you are thoughtful and fair, but you have this blind spot when it comes to Dion and his lackluster politically disastrous policies. You seem true to form tonight and again neither the polls nor the pundits back you up.

Dion preformed well last night, but he was complete after thought tonight. This was due largely to his English, but there are other reasons as well. In particular, rather than making specific hard hitting criticisms the way May did, Dion painted in broad strokes, wasted valuable time repeating mindless slogans, thanking people for what in many cases where stupid questions and saying that “the Liberal party has a plan”. He also failed to mention the Conservatives’ promise to create 125,000 childcare spaces by offering tax credits to businesses. The Conservatives have not created a single daycare spot!

You make it sound as if my criticisms of Dion are rooted in my support for some other leadership candidate. I assure you they are not. They rooted in fact. I have said all along that Dion’s English is not good enough and it not. I have said all along that Liberal policies will not capture the imagination of the Canadian population and they have not. The party of Pierre Trudeau has no sex appeal; it has no edge; it is hopelessly conservative; outside of a Prague spring during Chretien’s last year in office the Liberals have been decidedly not “cool”. I have said that Dion and Dion’s policies play badly in BC and every single poll bares that out; we are going to get killed out here.

If you really want to accuse me of bias you will have a better luck going after me over Jack Layton. I can not stand Layton; I think he is utterly and totally useless and yet he polls well and pundits and the populace seem to like him.
