There is no chance whatsoever that the NDP is going to overtake the Liberals this time around.
If the NDP is going to replace the Liberals as the official opposition in the near future, one thing has to happen this election. Harper has to be held to a minority. Otherwise, the Liberals will have 5 years to recover and any momentum the NDP might have in Quebec will be lost. Hold a Harper to minority and the Layton will be able to proclaim himself as the only true opposition to Stephen Harper as both the Liberals and Bloc continually prop up the government as they search for new leaders,

Watch the Crop poll tomorrow.
The NDP ahead in Quebec.
So! That does not change the fact that in order capitalize they need to keep Harper to minority.
My 2 cents:
The public will not like a government propped up by the Bloc. Most likely that gives Harper a majority the election after (in 18 months or whenever it suits the Bloc).
Why not run as the Liberal Democratic Party, currently polling about 48% against Harper's 39%, and show Canada what a real goverment looks like?
Political hacks may care about the differences between the NDP and the Libs, but most floating voaters just want a big winning team to latch onto. Currently they see only 1, don't particularly like it, but shrug and change the channel.
Why not give them another, bigger, better, center-left option?

The notion that the Liberals, NDP and Bloc are going to get together and form a government if Harper gets a minority is absurd. Those parties had the last 2 and half years to do just that. They could have formed such a government back on March 25, but they did not. It is just going to happen. If Harper gets a minority again, we will be were we are now.
As for the NDP Liberal forming one party, that could happen, but only if Harper gets a majority.
